AFF – HLG Monthly Monitoring of EU Forest Value Chains. Vol. 2, No. 7, April 2026

The global transition toward a climate-neutral bioeconomy is driving rapid regulatory and sustainability shifts across Europe and Africa, presenting vital windows of opportunity for industry stakeholders. The April 2026 report highlights major simplifications to the European Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)—which has been postponed to December 30, 2026—slashing expected corporate compliance costs by 75% and updating its product scope to add items like soluble coffee while excluding woody products like bamboo and rattan. Concurrently, the Council of the European Union has dramatically narrowed the scope of both the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) to shield smaller firms , while the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) has officially entered its definitive implementation phase alongside new voluntary carbon removal certification rules. Furthermore, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is set to become fully applicable on August 12, 2026, backed by new interpretative implementation guidance.

On the African continent, momentous green initiatives are accelerating regional bioeconomic development and climate resilience. South Africa is set to host the inaugural Bio360 Africa 2026 convention in Johannesburg this June to advance circular bioenergy systems , following its leadership in hosting the Southern African Great Green Wall Initiative (SA GGWI) workshop to build bankable land restoration project pipelines. Meanwhile, in the Congo River Basin, multi-stakeholder programs like the Sustainable Congo Basin Forest Economies Program (SCBFEP) are blending conservation with economic growth. This is highlighted by the launch of the massive 540,000-square-kilometer Kivu-Kinshasa Green Corridor, an innovative protected area protecting over 100,000 square kilometers of tropical forest that recently secured a €90 million support pledge from Brussels. To navigate these shifting value chains and learn how you can participate in open public feedback before the June 1, 2026 deadline.
