Increasing the world's forest cover through the implementation of afforestation and reforestation programmes is essential to address climate change.
During this high-level event, the Republic of the Congo will engage Member States, international organizations, scientists, financial institutions, the private sector, local communities, Indigenous Peoples, civil society, and technical and financial partners about the implementation of the "UN Decade for Afforestation and Reforestation in line with Sustainable Forest Management (2027-2036)."
The event will also present a potential roadmap towards the Decade's official launch in 2027.
Objectives
- Raise awareness and build momentum for the effective launch and implementation of the Decade in 2027.
- Present the Decade's vision, strategic directions and priority areas, including the strategic guidelines adopted at the First International Conference on Afforestation and Reforestation (Brazzaville - 2 to 5 July 2024).
- Strengthen alignment with existing international frameworks and initiatives, particularly those addressing climate change, biodiversity, deforestation and desertification, ecosystem restoration and the Sustainable Development Goals.
- Mobilize expertise, resources and partnerships to develop a comprehensive and adaptable global approach to afforestation and reforestation.
- Generate concrete political, technical, scientific and financial commitments to support national afforestation and reforestation efforts in line with sustainable forest management approaches and forest and landscape restoration principles.
